from the trenches
————————————————-
Thank you to all of those who have been reading ‘from the trenches’ and using the information to get out there, volunteer and help folks in need.
Today someone asked me why I started this whole thing. It started with a jump off the W. Hartford Bridge with A.T. thru-hiker, Flapjack. Then the storm shelter at the RWB Center in Hanover and thanks from a woman who equated hikers to her son and daughter. And a ‘reunion’ with Flapjack, Tramp and Baby Ruth still on the trail on their way to Mt. Katahdin. When I heard their story, the evacuation from the Hart’s house in W. Hartford, I started this page and the daily flood news update.
There were days when I get to sleep at 4am in the morning making sure the news gets out on the e-mail list serves for Norwich, Royalton, Hanover, Hartford, Sharon and here on facebook. To help the Hart’s, John Farrow, and Steve Arkwright-‘Trail Angels’-who extend kindness to strangers each year, to have their homes and livelihoods devastated motivates me to reach out to all of you. A few times I asked myself why I was doing this and why was it so important to be done everyday. My concern was that this would fade from people’s minds and be lulled into thinking that people aren’t still struggling and coping with the food aftermath everyday. While you go on to work, school, deal with everyday activities, those affected in Vermont are still living with the flood. They can’t simply escape back to the ‘normalcy’ of living life. That is their reality. Please think about that when you look at your reality surrounding you.
Thank you for the Trail Magic. Thank you for helping those in need. Thank you for lifting folks up around you. Thank you for restoring some folks faith in humanity. Thank you.
Please be advised:
‘From the Trenches’ will be going to a Thursday evening publication for Friday/Saturday/Sunday volunteer opportunities. Holidays and non-school days will have special consideration and receive a publication as well. Understand that this doesn’t mean that there aren’t still people or less ways to help. Simply that needs are shifting. You may see daily flood weekday needs at the VT Response Blog: http://vtresponse.wordpress.com/
This facebook website will continue on as a place where people can post information about a variety of volunteer opportunities in Vermont. Looking for volunteers? Post it on here. There will be a feed back and forth to a WordPress Blog titled ‘Vermont Volunteerism’ which can be accessed at https://vermontvolunteerism.wordpress.com
Thank you!
