Flood News Update: from the trenches

Take Back Vermont photographed by Melissa Hauteniemi

    ———————————————————————

Welcome to the Final publication of your Vermont flood news update.  We’ve been glad to hear that the information provided here has been informative, utilized to motivate folks to get out there and help our neighboring communities, and gather charitable donations for people still suffering in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

    ———————————————————————

There is a link on this list-serv(http://vtresponse.wordpress.com)  to Gov. Shumlin’s website which has a rundown of various disaster assistance programs available. There are low interest loans thru the US Small Business Administration to homeowners, renters, small businesses and private non profit organizations. Also, any family denied by FEMA should appeal right away. Sometimes the reason for the initial denial may be an incomplete application. Also call the Vermont Bar Association’s free legal hotline for legal help concerning legal issues connected with Tropical Storm Irene. The number is 1-800-889-2047.  The hotline coordinator is Angele Court.

    Deadlines Extended for FEMA Assistance

OCTOBER 18 – MONTPELIER – Gov. Peter Shumlin today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved an extension to the deadline for individuals and municipalities to apply for federal disaster assistance.

The deadline for Individual Assistance and Public Assistance is now November 15, 2011.

To register for Individual Assistance disaster assistance, call 800-621-FEMA (3362). Those with a speech disability or hearing loss who use a TTY can call 800-462-7585 directly, or 800-621-3362, if using 711 or Video Relay Service. Registration can also be done online anytime at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or through web-enabled mobile phone devices or smartphones at m.fema.gov.

Communities that suffered damage in the floods should submit their application for Public Assistance to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.  FEMA will provide at least 74 percent reimbursement for storm response and recovery costs for municipalities.  Regional planning commissions, the Vermont Agency of Transportation, and PA specialists from FEMA can help with the application process.

Applications for BOTH Individual and Public Assistance MUST be completed by November 15, 2011.

    Rochester

We’ve got the equipment, now we just need some people to volunteer to run it. Rochester  a mini-excavator, mini-bulldozer, dump truck and skidsteer to help with their cleanup efforts, but needs some volunteer operators to donate a day or two of running those rigs. If this is something you are able to help with, please contact Cynthia at 802-767-9100.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation will close a section of Route 73 in Rochester Wednesday, Oct. 26, for about a week.

The road section will be closed so that a one-lane temporary bridge installed shortly after Tropical Storm Irene can be removed and be replaced with a two-lane culvert.

Route 73 has been closed to through traffic since Irene struck on August 28, but VTrans has kept the road passable for local residents and emergency vehicles.

This closure, however, will prevent even local and emergency vehicles from being able to pass. The closure is expected to last at least one week.

The Route 73 one-lane temporary bridge was put in place so that VTrans could get equipment, parts and material to Route 73’s intersection with Route 100 where a major bridge linking the two roads was destroyed by Irene. A two-lane temporary bridge at the intersection was opened Oct. 15, and will remain open so that Rochester residents living along Route 73 can access Route 100.

The one-lane temporary bridge that is being removed on Oct. 26 is located several miles west of Route 73’s intersection with Route 100, and it sits along the steep hill leading to the top of Brandon Gap.

Closing Route 73 in this location will not prevent most Rochester residents from reaching Route 100, but the closure will prevent Rochester residents from using Route 73 to reach Brandon and its surrounding area.

Traffic headed to Brandon will have to detour using either Route 125 to the north, or Route 4 to the south.

I just realized I made an error in which twitter ID I gave you. I will give you the Vermont volunteerism twitter ID but it hasn’t been used in a while. I have to look it up so i’ll get back to you with that.
This blog was started to contain all the information for flood relief efforts for Tropical Storm Irene in the fall of 2011. I t has basically been inactive now for a year and a half. The idea was it would eventually change over to a resource in sourcing volunteer opportunities in Vermont but hadn’t quite gotten there.

Flood News Update: from the trenches

Take Back Vermont photographed by Melissa Hauteniemi

    ———————————————————————

Welcome to the weekend edition of your Vermont flood news update.  We’ve been glad to hear that the information provided here has been informative, utilized to motivate folks to get out there and help our neighboring communities, and gather charitable donations for people still suffering in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

Subject: [Hartford Discussion] Poor Valley News coverage

I am writing to the listserve because of the trouble I have had in conveying a message to everyone about the continued need for help that flood victims are experiencing.  Here’s what has been going on.  Last week, a reporter for the Valley News who covers Hartford’s selectboard meetings and who heard the piece that VPR did on flood recovery in the Upper Valley, called me and wanted to get my views on where the flood recovery stood.  I talked to her on the phone for approximately 20 minutes and the main message I told her was that the clean up isn’t over yet and that there was way more to do.  On Saturday, her article was in the paper and none of my comments were in it.   Instead the article more or less said the clean up was over.  So I called her to talk about this and she told me that the editors took that part of her article out. I was shocked by this – I felt leaving out the perspective of someone who has been actively participating in the recovery in West Hartford was very damaging as the article said just the opposite of what is really happening.  As a result of this, my wife and I wrote a letter to the Valley News’ Forum in attempt to maintain awareness of the continued need for help despite the Valley News’ conclusion that clean up is just about done.  But guess what, our LETTER was edited!  The Valley News removed the second sentence of our letter that said “Despite a long discussion with the reporter about all of the work that remains to be done, none of that information made it into the article, apparently due to editing.”  I guess the Valley News doesn’t like to print anything that is critical of them.  Have the editors even been out to see what has been going on in some parts of our town or other parts of Vermont?  It is very frustrating to be working week after week helping flooded out homeowners and then see an article in the Valley News that leaves the wrong impression.  True, our sentence that was critical of the Valley News was not essential to convey the main message of our letter to the Forum but it was still unsettling to have the edited out.  Freedom of the press still allows the editors of any given paper to edit out statements and facts that they do not agree with, understand or feel are correct.  I have been aware of the media biases and flaws in coverage for many years, however, this is the first time that I have so blatantly been edited and had my views on a story completely disregarded.  So beware, what you read in our local paper may not be the whole story – in fact, it may be the opposite of the whole story.

Thanks for reading, Dennis L. Brown

“This is great news,” the Governor said. “Vermonters now have additional time to apply for critical assistance from FEMA. I encourage everyone who thinks they might be eligible to contact their local FEMA office now to submit an application.”

The initial deadline was Oct. 31. With cold weather approaching, it was important for the deadline to be extended to allow more Vermonters – many of whom have been distracted with storm cleanup – to seek federal assistance.

Individual homeowners, renters, businesses, or others who suffered losses as a result of flooding at the end of August are eligible for assistance to repair their homes or to recover other losses.  Even if damage is minor, or if you are unsure whether damage will be covered by federal grants, individuals should apply as soon as possible, the Governor said.

Help is needed to pickup and distribute donations of new work clothing throughout Vermont. The clothing are currently housed in the Saint Johnsbury area and need to be distributed to sites around central and south-central Vermont including Stockbridge, Bethel and Woodstock.

You will need a pickup truck, box truck or large SUV and a couple of strong hands to help load the boxes.

10 drivers/trucks would be great. Timing in flexible, but we’d like to have deliveries set up by the end of the week, as colder weather is coming quickly.

Email vtresponse@yahoo.com if you can help with delivery with the subject line “Carhartt Delivery”

Thanks to Vermont Community Foundation for sharing the link to this PDF, which contains a plethora of information about where to give and how to get help. If you are looking for places to donate or for assistance, this is a great county by county place to start.

Above are volunteer opportunities that have been submitted by communities throughout Vermont, especially in communities that have been impacted by Tropical Storm Irene.

If you are not able to participate in one of these events, please consider organizing and submitting your own volunteer effort.

Also, a lot of projects can be done in your neighborhood without the need for an organized event:  help an elderly neighbor put on storm windows, rake leaves off the town green, or lead your family to collect roadside trash.  If every Vermonter does something — big or small — we’ll be ready for winter!

We still have a need for heavy machinery for Clean Up Day on 10/22. If you are an equipment operator and have a backhoe/excavator/dump truck/skidsteer etc and would be willing to volunteer on 10/22, please email vtcleanupday@gmail.com.

UVM is organizing for VT Clean Up Day for Faculty, Staff and Students. They will provide project placement, transportation and boxed lunches for the 22nd. If you are interested in being involved or signing up to volunteer, please visit: http://www.uvm.edu~uvmforvt/.

All that is left is a beautiful barn, built in the 1840s, which Tracy is now putting up for sale to help offset the cost of rebuilding after Irene. A picture is attached. Please share widely if you know of someone who might be interested in a beautiful piece of Vermont history. The barn is located in Jamaica.

    For Sale:

We don’t normally post this up here for sale, but in this case, we are making an exception. Tracy lost everything in Irene: her home, her land, her belongings. If you are interested, please email Tracy at  authenticlife2day@yahoo.com.

    ———————————————————————

There is a link on this list-serv to Gov. Shumlin’s website which has
a rundown of various disaster assistance programs available. There are
low interest loans thru the US Small Business Administration to
homeowners, renters, small businesses and private non profit
organizations. Also, any family denied by FEMA should appeal right
away. Sometimes the reason for the initial denial may be an incomplete
application. Also call the Vermont Bar Association’s free legal
hotline for legal help concerning legal issues connected with Tropical
Storm Irene. The number is 1-800-889-2047.  The hotline coordinator is
    Angele Court.

    Waterbury

Help Needed (10/10 and 10/11): Waterbury Posted on October 9, 2011 by Reality VC

Need volunteers to help scrape down a flood damaged floor. Volunteers should bring gloves and scraping knives (such as putty knives) Contact Gail Bresslauer, 224-6514 cell, 496-3795 home.

Need someone to pick up a queen mattress from Waterbury and deliver it to a flood victim who has now moved to Morrisville. This can happen any day this week. Please call Nancy at 802-760-8443 if you can help.

A teacher from Waterbury wrote to us to ask for help for three families in her classroom that were severely affected by the flood. These children have been given used toys and backpacks and other donations, but not all of these donations are what they needed to replace and move on. Gift cards will allow these kids to buy the things that they want or need and to start the process of making their houses homes again.

    1) Family A:  Lost everything (all toys and clothes.) Kids ages 11, 7 and 4.  Entire 1st floor flooded and needs new everything.
    2) Family B:  Mom had a daycare downstairs.  Kids Ages 5 and 2.
    3) Family C: Didn’t have power for days.   Kids ages 9, 4 and2.

Gift Cards can be sent to:

Thatcher Brook Primary School c/o A. Scribner 47 Stowe St Waterbury, VT 05676

(If I get more than what I need I would share with my co-teacher who also has 3 children affected in her classroom.) There were 5-6 neighborhoods in our school that were hit hard!!

STORAGE SPACE needed for Hunger Mt. Children’s Center.  The childcare/preschool at 123 S. Main St. Waterbury is in temporary space since the flood. It now needs to empty its former home in the state office complex and it does not have space in the temp.location. Imagine emptying a 2000+ square-foot home filled with toys, books, furniture, etc. to keep 40 kids busy every day.

Storage units – or get creative – how about a vacant garage at a home that’s for sale but off the market maybe? Or a combination of spaces could work. Affordable fees or a donation would be greatly appreciated. Would like to have the space through the winter – until May 1 would be idea.

Location within 30 min.-1 hour from Waterbury would be best. Chittenden County OK. Stowe/Morrisville/Montpelier/Mad River Valley.
HMCC is Waterbury’s oldest licensed child care center, in operation since the early 1970s. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit. It is licensed to care for up to 40 children ages 6 weeks-preschool daily. Richmond

We took about 3 cubic yards of mud out of my cellar.  It now needs to go back under the porch where it came from.  I am renting a dirt conveyor and I will need strong backed folks to help shovel dirt onto conveyor and have two people under the porch where the dirt is going to, to move the dirt to fill in all the spaces where the dirt came through the foundation. The foundation wall is safe, but under the porch is a small space to work in.  If I could get 5 people with strong backs and arms who don’t mind getting really dirty, it would be a life saver….

Can’t make it to volunteer? Consider donating to the Town of Rochester’s Irene fund, which will help defray costs of things like dumpsters and fuel. A single dumpster, which is an absolute necessity for cleaning up, costs $700 dollars.

It is part of the local universal preschool program with the public schools. Contact the center’s director, Kristen Nugent: kristen@hmcc.comcastbiz.net

    • The Giving Tree

802Relief, a Rutland-based nonprofit created after Irene, is establishing ‘The Giving Tree.’ ‘The Giving Tree(s)’ will be located in various storefronts in Rutland and the surrounding communities. Vermonters who were affected by flooding can anonymously request the donation of specific items they need. The ‘Tree’ will be given ‘leaves’ that patrons to the store can ‘pick’ and will go purchase the item. The item will be brought to 802Relief’s offices, where it will then be brought to the person or persons in need. Requests should be made to: 802Relief@gmail.com with the subject heading of ‘Giving Tree’ The message should include the needed item and the name, address and contact information (which will NOT be on the leaf, but is needed so we can get the item to the person) For further detail, contact Scott Tommola at (802)236-1381.

Flood News Update: from the trenches – [Updated 10/7 @11:45pm]

Take Back Vermont photographed by Melissa Hauteniemi

    ———————————————————————

Welcome to the weekend edition of your Vermont flood news update.  We’ve been glad to hear that the information provided here has been informative, utilized to motivate folks to get out there and help our neighboring communities, and gather charitable donations for people still suffering in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

Where to Help 10/8 and 10/9

As much as we wish the list of places to help was getting smaller, it simply is not. This weekend, we will need hundreds of volunteers to get through all of these projects. Some of these requests are ongoing ones, which demonstrates how much work it is to clean up. Some are new; new towns, new people, new needs. We may feel like response is wrapping up, but there are people around the state still in great need. Please consider giving a few hours this weekend to help a neighbor put the pieces back together.
You may go here to see the details of these links:
    http://vtresponse.wordpress.com/2011/10/07/where-to-help-108-and-109/

    Help Needed (ongoing): Statewide

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Rochester
Lots of volunteers (at least 25) are needed this weekend in Rochester. Please meet at 10 am at 88 North Main Street. Wear boots, work gloves and long pants. Bring your lunch and water. If you own and can operate a chainsaw, please bring it along.
The Carhartt Donation truck will be in Rochester this weekend, on Saturday from 9-1, at the Rochester school. The truck is full of Carhartt clothing to distribute to flood victims. It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, and if you’re up for a drive over to Rochester , please consider coming over to help.

Here’s what we need: 15 or so volunteers to help with this clothing distribution. It’s basically helping people find correct sizes, checking off lists, breaking down boxes, cleaning up when done. This will be from 1-4 p.m.

If you would like to help with the Carhartt effort please contact Barbara at St. Paul ’s Episcopal Church in White River Junction.  You can reach her at stpaulsvt@gmail.com .

If you can lift and carry 50 pounds, we need volunteers to help unload and deliver bagged horse feed in Rochester, VT this Sunday, October 9 at approximately 11:30am (in Rochester).

We have received grant funds from US Equine Disaster Relief and donations to support horse owners that were hit hard by Irene via horse feed and forage extender.  Guys Farm and Yard has agreed to deliver it, and Poulin Grain has made additional generous donations.  If you are able to join us to help unload and/or load this feed this weekend, please let me know.  We will have over 6 tons of feed to move, and about 1/4 of that will need to be walked across the foot bridge that connects Rte 100 to Rte 73.

If you can handle 50# bags, and can be in Rochester by 11:00-11:15am on Sunday, please email me with names and contact information atBetsy.Greene@uvm.edu before Friday (Oct 7) at noon.

If you need a ride, we may be able to accommodate, however, you will need to verify by Friday by 5:00pm that you will actually be there at Jeffords parking lot on Sunday at 9:30am to prevent unnecessary waiting for no-shows by drivers.

Rochester needs 150 volunteers to help on Saturday 10/15 to clean up the riverbeds that were wrecked by Irene. Please meet at the Town Offices at 10 am. Wear boots and work gloves, and bring your lunch and water to drink. If you are skilled with and own a chainsaw, please bring that as well.

Can’t make it to volunteer? Consider donating to the Town of Rochester’s Irene fund, which will help defray costs of things like dumpsters and fuel. A single dumpster, which is an absolute necessity for cleaning up, costs $700 dollars.

    Waterbury

It is part of the local universal preschool program with the public schools. Contact the center’s director, Kristen Nugent: kristen@hmcc.comcastbiz.net

They are trying to clean and sort through all their tools and machinery, need some carpentry help, some help moving heavy equipment, and even more importantly, they have a house that they’ve not been able to deal with because they’ve been focusing on the business. They are going to be tearing the roof off of this house, in order to burn it. Any help they could get would be so appreciated. They do not work on Saturdays, so during the week or Sunday would be most helpful.

You may contact Bruce Conrad at 802-295-3948, or just show up at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday at 6025 Rt.14, W. Hartford . If you can’t find anyone there, please call the above number.

    Appreciation

Big thank you to everyone who came out to EMS and donated to the West Hartford Village Store rebuild fund!  We’re glad you enjoyed the lovely music and performances of John T and Joice Marie!  Thank you to EMS for having us there and supporting the A.T. community on Club Day!”  ~D.O.C. “Thank you for what you are doing to inform folks.  The hard work continues on this project.  Please keep up your good work.”

“Thanks so much for sharing the news.  I’ve read all of your updates and have helped where I could.  I would love to make a donation, albeit small, to the West Hartford Village Store.  How do I go about it if I cannot stop by EMS?  I will try, but the next 2 days I may be in the opposite direction.  My husband and I hiked the AT 15 years ago (next week!!!), and although we were not lucky enough to have the store open when we went through West Hartford, we live just up the road and would like to thank them for all of their efforts and help them be ready for next year’s hikers.  Recent south bounders will certainly miss out as they come through.”

“My husband, and I want to thank you for the herculean job you have done letting us all know what is happening and how we can help Vermonters recovering from Hurricane Irene.  We were some of the lucky ones who didn’t suffer much damage and were able to help dig out others after the storm.  Thanks mainly to you and your detailed listings, we were able to know where to go and what to bring when we were able to help.  It also helped us even when we couldn’t volunteer, since you gave updates and quotes from both volunteers and storm victims.”

Thanks! I will see if there is something I can offer my services for (I have both asthma –dust is hard– and a bad lower back problem which makes road work hard too. But I can do paperwork and co-ordination and assist in sorting clothes, papers, etc or make sandwiches and coffee. Have helped out a bit in Rochester and will continue to do so and ask others to also. I appreciate your message to all of us,and will see what I can do. Thanks ! Ladybelle (Isabella Fiske McFarlin)
